Maggie Will Soon Come-on-Down to Sunny California

(Galt, CA) Maggie, the lone African elephant at the Alaska Zoo, will soon be coming-on down to PAWS’ northern California sanctuary.

The news of the unanimous decision by the Alaska Zoo Board of Directors to send Maggie to PAWS was received with enthusiasm.

An elated PAWS Co-founder and director, Ed Stewart said, “Maggie is a wonderful elephant. After visiting her recently, I know she will be a wonderful addition to our group of African elephants. She is almost the same age as Mara and 71 – we have often wondered if she is from the same area in Zimbabwe as 71 – perhaps even from the same elephant cull in the early 1980’s.”

PAWS is home to four other African elephants – Lulu, Ruby, Mara and 71. PAWS Directors Pat Derby and Ed Stewart raised 71 from age four. Mara has been at the PAWS sanctuary for 15 years. Lulu came from San Francisco Zoo two and one-half years ago and Ruby is the most recent arrival – coming from the LA Zoo in spring 2007.

“We are looking forward to working cooperatively with the Alaska Zoo staff to ensure a safe transport to PAWS. Our staff and veterinarians will be on hand to welcome Maggie and assist her – easing the adjustment period and giving her the time she needs to socialize with her new companions .” PAWS’ Pat Derby states.

Maggie has attracted national attention. The news of the board’s decision and her “future home at PAWS” makes one person in particular very happy. Mr. Bob Barker. Mr. Barker recently joined Ed Stewart in Anchorage to make a personal request to send Maggie to PAWS. “I congratulate the Alaska Zoo on its decision to place Maggie at the PAWS Sanctuary. PAWS is the best possible place for Maggie. At PAWS she will be able to live a life that is the nearest possible thing to what her life would be in her natural habitat. I have agreed to make a contribution for Maggie’s endowment – her annual care – and I am happily writing the check today!”
