Meet
J.B.
J.B is a tiger born in captivity on December 7, 2015. He was among a group of tigers relocated to a private facility in Northern California by the Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation, a sham “sanctuary” facing a state-led shutdown due to repeated violations of animal welfare laws. Reportedly, in an apparent effort to avoid the confiscation of federally protected animals, Kirshner shuffled tigers and other species to outside facilities.
Following a criminal investigation opened by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the PETA Foundation filed a lawsuit against Kirshner, warning that the placements in outside facilities would also come under scrutiny. The operator of the private facility in Northern California ultimately sought assistance from the Oakland Zoo to find permanent homes for the tigers.
J.B. arrived on June 17, 2026, and quickly won over his caregivers. One of the first things he did after stepping into his new habitat was make a beeline for his pool and dive right in. He quickly revealed his favorite pastime: leisurely soaks with only his head visible above the water.
For years, J.B. lived in a barren cage with little opportunity to express natural behaviors. Today, he has the space and the choice to explore his large natural habitat, splash in his pool, and rest beneath shady trees. At PAWS, J.B. will always have the expert care, respect, and love he deserves.
