PAWS’ August 2026 Newsletter
By john.merry
The August 2026 PAWS newsletter celebrates milestone anniversaries for longtime sanctuary residents, including capuchin monkeys Chico and Zeppo, who have now been at PAWS for 30 years after being rescued from horrific conditions in a private home, and American black bear Mack, who marks 10 years at the sanctuary. PAWS also celebrates African lion Pasha’s 11th birthday and reports an important animal-welfare victory after the California Fish and Game Commission rejected a proposal that would have allowed certain nonhuman primates to be kept as pets. The newsletter highlights PAWS’ veterinary externship program, including a recent week-long visit from a UC Davis veterinary student who gained hands-on experience caring for elephants and tigers, and reminds supporters that registration is closing soon for the October 2–3 PAWS International Captive Wildlife Conference in Sacramento. It concludes by emphasizing PAWS’ commitment to providing lifelong care for rescued captive wildlife and the many ways supporters can help through donations, symbolic adoptions, and wish-list purchases.
