Meet
Georgette
Georgette, an emu, arrived at PAWS in January 2017 after an eventful journey. In December of the previous year, residents of nearby Valley Springs began reporting sightings of an emu running loose through their town. After more than a week of wandering through neighborhoods, yards and pastures, the emu was found in an enclosed maintenance yard, where Calaveras County Animal Services finally corralled and gently herded the large bird into a horse trailer.
PAWS stepped in to offer Georgette a permanent home. She arrived at our Amanda Blake Memorial Wildlife Refuge (now closed) in January 2017, before being transferred to the ARK 2000 sanctuary, where all of our animals now live.
Georgette is now part of a flock of emus, called a “mob”, and enjoys a large, enclosed habitat filled with trees, grass, natural vegetation, and a covered shelter. Like other emus, she is particularly fond of water.
