Meet
Dally

Dally, a female American black bear, arrived at PAWS on March 18, 2025. She was one of several animals seized from the Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation in Butte County by the California Department of Fish as the result of a criminal investigation involving animal welfare related violations of the California Fish and Game Code.

Born in the wild in California around 2014, Dally’s exact date of birth and early life are not known, We don’t know how she came to be taken from the wild as a young bear, but we do know that she has spent most of her life confined to a cage.

Dally is observant, thoughtful, and reserved, with a beautiful face and deep, soulful eyes. She loves to relax in her pool and enjoys being gently showered with water from a hose – simple pleasures that she clearly relishes. Dally is a selective eater with a sweet tooth, with favorite foods that include fish, berries, and dates.

For likely the first time in her captive life, Dally roams a spacious habitat – her very own piece of the California foothills complete with native grasses, soft soil, and shady oak trees. Dally can choose to forage, explore, or just take a nap in her new, more natural home.

At PAWS, Dally is discovering what it means to be a bear again.
