Meet
Herman

Herman, a tiger born in 2012, was rescued as part of a major federal action against the owners of a private zoo in Oklahoma, Jeff and Lauren Lowe, who were featured in the Netflix series Tiger King.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture orchestrated the action, which led to the seizure of 68 big cats from the facility. At the time, the DOJ stated that the couple had failed to provide “basic veterinary care, appropriate food, and safe living conditions for the animals.” The Lowes have been permanently banned from exhibiting wild animals.

In May 2021, Herman, along with another tiger named Falcor found safe refuge at PAWS’ ARK 2000 sanctuary.

Herman is a gentle and reserved tiger who enjoys the quiet life at the sanctuary. Though naturally shy, he reveals his playful side when he thinks no one is watching, rolling in the grass or lounging on his back. He shares friendly “chuffs” – a soft, breathy snort that tigers use to communicate with each other and trusted humans – with his caregivers and rubs against his enclosure’s fence.

At PAWS, Herman lives peacefully, enjoying the dignity and care he has always deserved. We are honored to have him as part of our family.
