Meet
Mack

Mack, a wild-born black bear, was orphaned at a young age. He was captured by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as a small cub, after becoming too accustomed to humans and approaching people for food. Compounding his challenges, Mack was missing part of his right rear leg, leading officials to determine that he could not safely be released back into the wild.

Mack arrived at PAWS’ Galt sanctuary (now closed) on August 16, 2016, after spending a year under the dedicated care of veterinarians and staff at The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona, California. He was later transferred to ARK 2000 and his new home in the Bob Barker Bear Habitat at PAWS.

Despite his difficult start, Mack is a gentle, playful bear who is full of energy and curiosity. He especially loves splashing in his pool, and he explores his spacious, grassy habitat with a gently sloped hill, shady trees, and a cozy den for resting.

Mack appears to be a “night owl”, preferring to nap during the day and becoming more active at night. Our overnight animal care staff has spotted him happily playing in his pool, wandering his habitat, and resting atop of his grassy hill beneath the stars. When it comes to food, Mack enjoys a diverse diet – with favorites including fish, grapes, avocado, dandelion greens, and the sweet figs that grow on the sanctuary’s grounds.
