Meet
Prince

Prince (formerly Chang Dee), an Asian elephant, was born at the Portland Zoo on May 24, 1987. At 16 months of age, when calves are still dependent on their mothers, the zoo separated the pair, sending Prince to the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (which no longer has animal acts).

On July 21, 2011, PAWS welcomed Prince, the second bull elephant to call PAWS home. He was donated voluntarily to PAWS, on request, by Feld Entertainment, the parent company of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Upon his arrival, Prince delighted in his newfound environment, spending the first two hours joyfully throwing dirt, eating heartily, and finally settling into a cozy dirt pile for a well-deserved nap.

These days, Prince takes life at an easy pace, often napping on a gentle slope. Since he has arthritis, this is a good way to relieve pressure on his joints, and sleep is restorative to his overall health. Prince adores frozen blueberries, strawberries, and most other fruits.

Prince likes to be outdoors – day or night, rain or shine – where he can take in the sights and sounds of the natural world around him.
