PAWS’ June 2026 Newsletter
By PAWS
The latest PAWS newsletter highlights the importance of providing rescued wild animals with environments that support their natural behaviors. A featured article explores how elephants sleep, noting that they require only a few hours of rest each day but rely on comfortable, spacious habitats to encourage healthy sleeping patterns. At the PAWS sanctuary, elephants are able to nap naturally—standing or lying down on soft soil—demonstrating how thoughtfully designed environments contribute to their overall wellbeing.
The newsletter also announces that registration is now open for the 2026 PAWS International Captive Wildlife Conference, taking place October 2–4 near Sacramento, where experts from around the world will discuss issues affecting captive wildlife and elephant welfare. Other highlights include celebrating tiger Cleo’s third birthday and remarkable recovery after being rescued from neglect, honoring the legacy of PAWS co-founder Pat Derby and her lifelong advocacy for captive wild animals, and spotlighting PAWS’ continued international efforts to improve elephant welfare by urging Zurich Zoo to end its elephant breeding program following a series of calf deaths over the past decade.
